WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?
Capoeira (Kah-POO-eh-rah) is a form of rhythmic martial arts that was developed by slaves brought to Brazil from the continent of Africa over 400yrs ago. Marked by fluid and often acrobatic movements, capoeira offers a cardiovascular workout that also builds strength and flexibilty.
The movements are flowing and circular, characterized by evasions and trickery, or "malandragem". Players turn a defensive evasion into a launch pad for an attack, and fake weakness to lure their opponent into a vulnerable false sense of security. The game or "jogo" can be playful and friendly, graceful and artistic, or even aggressive and deadly.
Within capoeira there is music played with traditional instruments that "guide" players through a conversation of movements. Songs are sung in Brazilian portugues which was the unifying language of the different tribes enslaved during the inception of capoeira. In addition to providing an excellent full-body workout capoeira builds community connections and cultural awareness. Capoeira has something for everyone.
